Modern microsurgical techniques for removing lens have evolved and improved dramatically over the past 20 years. During this procedure, the eye's natural lens is removed because it becomes cloudy or loss of flexibility as a result of the natural aging process. In the early days, lens surgery was performed only when a person could no longer see. The cloudy lens was removed in one piece through a large incision that required many stitches. Patients stayed in the hospital for days after the surgery. They had to wear thick, cumbersome contact lenses to see well enough to function. Cataracts are generally believed to be an unavoidable part of the aging process. But the good news is cataract surgery has undergone tremendous technological advances.  

There is a new refractive surgery procedure capable of reducing or even eliminating the need for bifocals and reading glasses for certain categories of patients. This procedure, called SuperSight Surgery, utilizes the same successful techniques of modern cataract surgery to correct nearsightedness and farsightedness and near (reading) vision. This procedure replaces the lens inside your eye with a specially designed, accommodative or multifocal intraocular lens (IOL). The surgical procedure used is identical to the proven safe and effective procedure used for cataract surgery. The other refractive procedures like LASIK or CK, however, is the fact that none of which have been proven effective for the types of vision conditions that SuperSight Surgery corrects.

SuperSight Surgery could be the procedure of choice for those candidates who are too nearsighted, too farsighted or have cornea that are too thin for LASIK. It is also a viable alternative for those who wish to eliminate their dependence on traditional or progressive bifocals and those who may be showing signs (even without symptoms) of developing cataracts.

SuperSight Surgery represents the latest development in artificial lenses such as Akkommodative 1CU, Multifocal Tecnis, ReZOOM and Acrysof ReSTOR which can provide patients with a better quality of life. The lenses are designed to give most patients the ability to perform their normal activities without the need of glasses or contact lenses. Unlike traditional artificial lenses, distance and near can be seen in focus without spectacles.
